Functional Behaviour Assessment & Positive Behaviour Supports (EA 2050)

Length of Course: 50 hours

Course Description:

Students will examine the principles of Practical Functional Behaviour Assessment and Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) planning and explore practices and interventions to promote positive social and communication skills, while decreasing and preventing challenging behaviours.

Students will learn about different forms of data collection, such as interviews and observations, to investigate the functions of behaviour, self-regulation, and how their own personal biases influence their response to behaviours. Students will learn how to define and observe behaviours, collect, and record behavioural data, as well as how to develop a positive behaviour support plan based on a practical functional behaviour assessment.

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Understand how their own experiences and values impact their response to behaviour
  • Be able to gather important and relevant information for the Practical Functional Behaviour Assessment (e.g., interview and observational data)
  • Recognize if a behaviour is distracting, disruptive, or destructive, and the level of interference
  • Define a behaviour as being observable and measurable
  • Understand that behaviour is a powerful form of communication and that it often serves many functions
  • Understand the development of an Practical Functional Behaviour Assessment and how to utilize one to develop a Positive Behaviour Support Plan, considering the whole individual and all of their unique strengths and needs when doing so
  • Multiple events co-occur to evoke problem behaviour
  • Multiple events occur simultaneously to reinforce (strengthen) problem behaviour
  • Different forms of problem behaviour by the same child are often maintained by the same synthesized reinforcement contingency
  • Recognize that developmental level, context, and environment impact a person’s behaviour
  • Understand the importance of accurate data tracking and communication of results
  • Understand and utilize a variety of Positive Behaviour Support Plan strategies
  • Implement, monitor, and revise, assess, and clearly report on an ongoing basis, the results of the Positive Behaviour Support Plan
