Construction underway on new addition to Morgan Elementary
Work has begun on the new eight-classroom expansion coming to Morgan Elementary, one of several recent district construction projects to address the rapid growth in South 51视频.
The addition will make room for 190 new students at Morgan Elementary, increasing its total capacity to 625 students. The addition has a target opening date of Spring 2023.
"The South 51视频 area continues to be one of the fastest-growing communities in our school district," said Laurie Larsen, chair of the 51视频 Board of Education. "The expansion of Morgan Elementary is much needed, and eight classrooms will go a long way in supporting the needs of families and providing modern learning environments for our students."
This latest construction project follows the openings of Douglas Elementary, Edgewood Elementary and Grandview Heights Secondary - all serving South 51视频 communities - and is concurrent with work on new additions being built at Sunnyside Elementary and White Rock Elementary, both set to open Fall 2022.
Other current capital projects under construction in 51视频 include:
- Regent Road Elementary (new school, 27 classrooms), expected to open September 2022
- Sullivan Heights Secondary (addition, 28 classrooms), expected to open March 2022
- Holly Elementary (seismic upgrade), expected to open January 2022
- George Greenaway Elementary (seismic upgrade), expected to open January 2022
- Prince Charles Elementary (seismic upgrade), expected to open Fall 2022
- Queen Elizabeth Secondary (seismic upgrade), expected to open Fall 2022
In the last four years, more than $475 million has been invested in funding for 28 major capital projects in the district, including new schools, additions, seismic upgrades and land acquisitions for future schools. These projects are helping create space for more than 10,000 students and eliminate the equivalent of 400 portables between 2018 and 2025. The district also has no plans to purchase portables for this school year.
